WREN (Wallowa Resources' Explorations of Nature)
WREN is a field science program for students who enjoy learning natural and cultural history through experience. During the school year for 5th-8th graders, WREN meets all day on Fridays. This web-page reflects our school year program. We also offer a Summer WREN Backpacking Program for 13-17 year olds.
During each class, students and knowledgeable field instructors visit different regions of Wallowa County to learn hands-on about our wildlife, plants, mountains, canyons, grasslands, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and people.
Spring 2010 WREN Courses
This spring, for those familiar with WREN, the class structure is different. We're offering two 5-Friday courses where we're encouraging students to participate in all 5 Fridays:
- Ecology Adventure Course for 5th & 6th graders from April 2 to April 30
- Advanced Ecology Adventure for 7th & 8th graders from May 7 to June 4
Past WREN topics
Tracks, Trees, & Trail Tales: Wildlife in Wallowa County's Winter - Students learned tracking and animal sign identification to perform an inventory of winter wildlife in 2 local wildlife reserves.
Ridges to Rivers: a Watershed Restoration Story - A study of a local stream restoration project, including an aquatic bug and plant survivability survey.
11,500 Years of Inhabitance - A study of how primitive technologies, cooking, and hunting methods tied native peoples to the local landscape.
